Welcome to Casa Scola Loano
Casa Scola Loano is not just a residence in the heart of Loano’s historic center: it is a story of family, sea, and hospitality passed down through generations.
“Scola” is the nickname our family has always been known by—a lineage of sailors and seafarers, men who lived the sea as both home and destiny.
It all began in 1919, when my great-grandmother Maddalena Podestà, known as Manin a Scola, married Tommaso Del Balzo, a sailor by trade, as were all his brothers and the men in his family.
Tommaso, however, held a different dream: to leave the sea and open a small pasta shop in Loano.
Shortly after their marriage, upon learning that his wife was expecting a child, he decided to embark on one final journey. His plan was simple and full of hope: return with his settlement, settle permanently in Loano, and build a future for his family there.
Sadly, that journey was also his last. Tommaso lost his life at sea, leaving Maddalena alone, very young and expecting their first child.
With great courage, my great-grandmother used the settlement money to purchase the entire building, from the ground floor to the second floor: the house that today has become Casa Scola Loano.
But the fear of being left without resources, with a newborn child, led her to make a difficult yet forward-thinking decision.
She chose to keep half of the first floor for herself and entrust the rest of the house to her family: part of the second floor to her brother Bartolomeo, another part to her aunt Teresa, and half of the first floor to her other brother Angelo, known as Angetto.
Within these walls grew her son—my grandfather, Pippo u Scola—who found in his uncle Angetto the father figure fate had taken from him too soon.
In 1945, my grandfather Pippo married my grandmother Lina.
A few years later, this house began to transform into a place of hospitality: right within these rooms, my grandparents started welcoming the first tourists who came to Loano to spend their seaside holidays.
It was a kind of hospitality made of simplicity, warmth, and genuine care—the kind only a family home can offer.
They lived here until their passing, preserving the memory of the house and its deep connection to the sea.
Today, Casa Scola Loano has been entrusted to me.
I felt that the best way to honor them was to continue the path they had started, keeping alive the tradition of family hospitality.
For this reason, I chose to dedicate each room to their names, so that every stay carries a piece of
our story:
Manin, Angetto, Pippo, and Lina.
Here, even today, tradition meets hospitality.

Annamaria
The original apartment on the Caruggio
Annamaria is the apartment most closely tied to the roots of Casa Scola Loano: this is where Maddalena, our Manin, grew up before marrying and beginning the family story that still lives within these walls today.
Located in the heart of Loano’s historic center, just steps from the sea, the apartment retains all the authentic charm of Ligurian homes.
The tall windows overlooking the Caruggio, typical of traditional architecture, fill the space with light and bring in the slow, evocative rhythm of the village.
The apartment features two double bedrooms: one more intimate, connected to a single room with a window—ideal for families; the other overlooking the Caruggio, with two tall Ligurian windows enhancing its historic character.

The apartment also includes a practical kitchenette with a small balcony, a private bathroom with shower, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi.
A family home rich in memory, designed for those who wish to experience Loano authentically, with all the space and comfort of a true apartment.
AAUT Argentina
Studio with terrace in the heart of Loano
Argentina is a small open-space apartment with great sentimental value, located in the same building as Annamaria and purchased later by my grandfather—testifying to our family’s deep connection to this home.
I chose to dedicate it to Argentina, Manin’s mother and my great-great-grandmother, a strong and determined woman whose spirit continues to live on in the story of Casa Scola Loano.
Located in the heart of Loano’s historic center, with entrance from Via Garibaldi, the characteristic Caruggio, the apartment enjoys a perfect location: right in the center, just steps from the sea, yet with windows facing the back of the street, ensuring peace and quiet.

The kitchen is equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay, including a microwave and washing machine.
